Question about sunflower vandals; insects, birds, squirrels, or reptiles?

Squirrels eat anything, but also those carpenter bees which look like bumble bees. One ate a rosebud right off the stem which was in my hand. I did not know they did that to flowers. My grandson was with me and was amazed too. Yes, lay off the water, and when they dry out somewhat, they should be okay.
