Can I tape window screen material to my air conditioner? ?

I am absolutely terrified of fireflies and moths and both are coming in through my window ac. I read something about taping screen material to the outside vents - is that okay? And what should I use for around the ac? Any other suggestions would be lovely.. Thanks.
